The Story

The narrative behind the song

Everything this project offers is anchored in one afternoon at a well in Samaria, recorded in John 4.

A dusty stone path winding toward a distant well at dusk
  1. John 4:7–15

    1. A request for water

Jesus asks a Samaritan woman for a drink, crossing a boundary of gender, ethnicity and history.

  2. John 4:16–19

    2. A life already known

He names what she has lived, and she recognises a prophet is speaking.

  3. John 4:25–26

    3. The One who sees her

She speaks of the coming Messiah. He answers plainly that He is speaking with her.

  4. John 4:28–30

    4. The jar left behind

She abandons the errand that brought her there and returns to the town with a question.

  5. John 4:39–42

    5. Belief that becomes personal

Many believe because of her testimony, and then because they heard Him themselves.

Two women, one distinction

The woman of John 4 is a historical figure in the Gospel account. The woman in the music video is a contemporary, fictional character crafted as an invitation into the same questions. They should never be conflated, and neither should the video be treated as a retelling.

A note on Scripture

Long-form narrative teaching is authored on the study pages. Scripture is cited by reference rather than reproduced at length, so nothing here depends on a particular copyrighted translation.
